Eating

5 North St 5 North St, GL54 5LH 01242 604566, 5northstreetrestaurant.co.uk. Splendid fine dining in this historic village building, spacious inside despite low beams, with warm red styling. The food – like the service – is charming and unfussy: crab salad, duck breast, Cotswold lamb with Evesham asparagus, with superb meat-free options (truffle risotto, duck-egg spaghetti). This is cooking to remember. Three courses at lunch £27, at dinner £54 (vegetarian £40). Tues 7–9pm, Wed–Sat 12.30–1.30pm & 7–9pm, Sun 12.30–1.30pm.

The Lion Inn 37 North St, GL54 5PS 01242 603300, thelionwinchcombe.co.uk. This fifteenth-century ex-coaching inn has been thoroughly updated, now doubling as a contemporary, family-run village bolthole. The menu relies on seasonal local produce – duck and chicken terrine, or lamb with parsnip puree – but also ventures into light, modern European styles for tagines or seafood dishes. Mains £14–18. Kitchen Mon–Thurs noon–3pm & 6–9pm, Fri & Sat noon–3pm & 6–9.
